Suncor East Coast wins safety award

							2016 Canada's Safest Employer Awards
Both Paul Haley, maintenance supervisor, (left) and Dwayne Burden, EHS, advisor, have worked at sea over the past two years and played key roles leading to Suncor receiving this award.

On Oct. 24, Suncor East Coast was honoured as the recipient of the gold award in the Oil and Gas category of the 2016 Canada’s Safest Employer Awards. The annual awards are presented by Canadian Occupational Safety magazine to organizations using best practices to foster a culture of safety.

Darryl Downey, manager, Environment, Health and Safety, East Coast, accepted the award on behalf of the team. “Safety is a core value of Suncor’s. We do it safely or we don’t do it at all,” says Darryl. “We received this award because our front-line workers and supervisors on Terra Nova have been living our values. They have all taken personal accountability for their own safety and the safety of their co-workers.”

In recognizing Suncor’s East Coast business, Canada’s Safest Employers cited a number of examples of how we act on our Journey to Zero commitment:

  • the Terra Nova Offshore Installation Manager’s (OIM) ‘meet and greet’ with incoming crew on the arrival of each helicopter to re-set the focus on safety;
  • front-line worker engagement in the hand injury improvement plan;
  • our focus on reducing risk tolerance through our Safety Starts with Me Program; and
  • the implementation of field-level hazard identification and risk assessment tools.

The award acknowledges the accomplishments of all involved, but the team recognizes that our Journey to Zero is an ongoing one. There is still work to be done, but the vigilance, effort and accomplishments that are reflected in this award are exactly what will help get us there.

Since receiving the award, the team has maintained a positive safety record through safe and carefully planned actions.
