Suncor has been a proud sponsor of Junior Achievement’s (JA) Business Hall of Fame for more than 10 years. In 2016, we redirected our funds to focus on the students by sponsoring specific educational programs in the school system. This was a natural fit because JA’s mission to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy aligns with Suncor’s commitment to leadership, operational excellence and community involvement.
JA offers two programs that work with Grade 6 and Grade 9 students respectively. The “Our Business World” program, offered to Grade 6 students, focuses on the opportunities and challenges of entrepreneurship in Canada. In this program a volunteer teaches the students about the business world and the importance of innovation over the course of four 50-minute sessions.
The “Economics for Success” program, offered to Grade 9 students, focuses on planning an educational and career path for the future. This full-day workshop requires two volunteers per class to provide insight to the students about life after high school and help them use their strengths to their advantage.
Both programs are very successful, and provide opportunities for professionals to interact with students and deliver programs that simulate real world experiences while helping them think critically and gain new perspectives.
In June and September of 2016, the president and CEO of JA, Sandra Patterson hosted three information sessions at Suncor in St. John’s, where Suncor employees learned more about the programs and opportunities to participate as volunteers. As a result, 20 volunteers have signed up to participate in the Grade 9 program in the fall of 2016.
